COE Conducts Socialization Lecture/Workshop

A lecture/workshop on Personality Development and Social Graces was held by the College
of Education (COE) on February 8 at the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology

Senior Council led by Alfred Justo and the Junior Council led by Jemylyn Plagata.

College Conducts ICT Training

Aiming to develop and train the teacher-education graduates of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) to become more competitive in utilizing technology for education, the WVCST-World Links Training Center conducted the Enhanced Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Training on February 4-8 at the WVCST K-3 building.

The topics during the 5-day ICT training centered on the uses of computers and other forms of multi-media devices in enhancing the teaching-learning process. Participants were trained to perform the basics of Microsoft Office, develop web surfing skills in identifying educational sites, recognize suitable pedagogy in ICT grounded classroom, and promote tele-collaboration in accomplishing academic tasks. The hands-on activities included making multi-media presentations, designing tables, graphs and simple desktop publications, and creating web quests. Each participant’s finished products were compiled into a portfolio which was presented during the closing program.

The team of trainers/facilitators was composed of Dr. John Eric V. Juaneza, team leader; Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut, Dr. Carmen L. Cruzata, Dr. Catherine L. Sumaculub, Dr. Noli R. Mandario, Dr. Renelda P. Nacianceno, Dr. Frisian Y. Causing, and Dr. Ma. Asusina Asuncion E. Echaveria. The project is a collaborative effort with World Links Philippines and Intel Philippines, leading companies in the field of technology.

Tribu Salakayan Retains 2013 Kasadyahan Title

Besting 11 other competing tribes coming from cities and provinces of Western Visayas, Tribu Salakayan of Miag-ao Town, Iloilo defended its title by emerging champion in the Kasadyahan Regional Cultural Competition  of the Dinagyang  Festival 2013 held last January 27 at the Iloilo City Freedom Grandstand.

The tribe, which is composed of students from the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST)-Southern Iloilo Polytechnic College (SIPC), retained its title after a spectacular performance depicting the history of Miag-ao town. In colorful costumes, props, spirited dancing, and lively music, the tribe reenacted how the Miag-ao locals were able to defeat the invading Moros with the Sto. Niño’s help during the Spanish times. The performance made the tribe romp off with the best in choreography and best in performance special awards.

As champion, the tribe won P150, 000, a trophy and additional cash prizes for the special awards during the 2013 Kasadyahan sa Dinagyang Festival Awards night.

Seventy dancers, thirty drummers/musicians and twenty props men comprise the tribe. Dr. Raul F. Muyong, WVCST-Miag-ao Campus Administrator, is the tribe manager. Its choreographer, Ramon Emmanuel, Jr., was adjudged the best choreographer of the 2013 Kasadyahan.

Other winners of this year’s Kasadyahan are Tribu Kaing of Leon, Iloilo (1st runner up); Tribu Bayluhay of San Joaquin, Iloilo (2nd runner up); Tribu Padagyaw of Dumarao, Capiz (3rd runner up); and Tribu Mandaragat of San Jose, Antique (4th runner up).

Tribu Salakayan first joined Dinagyang Festival’s Kasadyahan last year and was declared champion. The tribe represented the province and placed fifth in the 2012 Aliwan Fiesta -The Philippines' Festival of Champions where participants from different festivals in the country competed.

Having won the title this year, Tribu Salakayan will once again represent Iloilo in the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila on April 11-13, 2013.

CEA/ICT Building soon to rise

A building for the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA)/Information Communications Technology (ICT) of the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) is up for construction in the WVCST-Main Campus fronting the Alumni Building.

This is after the WVCST Academic Community held a groundbreaking ceremony for the building last Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. The ceremony was attended by Iloilo City Congressman Jerry P. Treñas, Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog, members of the WVCST Board of Trustees and the WVCST Academic Community at the building’s site.

The three-storey CEA/ICT building amounting P110, 556,711.71 Million is expected to be completed in November 2013. It will accommodate the mechanical and communications technology laboratories, audio-visual and conference room, classrooms, offices and a powerhouse.

Upon completion, the building will not only provide a state-of-the art learning environment for the students but also address the problem of limited facilities and infrastructure of an increasing college enrolment. It will also decongest the Graciano Lopez-Jaena and Technical Vocational Education Program (TVEP) Buildings whose classrooms are presently occupied by the CEA and ICT students.

Contractor of the building is the RRL Builders Corporation in joint venture with Armando U. Khong Hun General Contractor.
