The Public Information and Communications Office (PICO) recently conducted a writeshop on Multimedia Reporting and Media Governance which was held on September 3-4, 2024 at ISAT U Students’ Services Hall. The activity which was participated by the different Student Publications across the five ISAT University campuses, aimed to address the growing need for comprehensive training in modern journalism practices. Considered as the voice of the student body, student journalists must equip themselves not only with traditional writing skills but also a deep understanding of media ethics, governance and multimedia production techniques.
The writeshop gave the students the chance to learn more about digital journalism, headline and lead writing which were discussed by PICO’s publication chief Dr. Olive Joy Abing. A workshop followed which tested them in writing headlines and leads using the news articles given by Dr. Abing. Meanwhile, Mr. Arturo Bahoyan, content chief, presented the do’s and don’t’s of newswriting and feature writing which they later used in writing their articles.
Other topics were photojournalism, infographics, social media etiquette and governance which were discussed by PICO’s chief for creatives Mr. Reynaldo Ilangos, and Information Officers.
The two-day event provided the participants new insights and discovered their creativity not just in writing and photography but as well as in performing the task required during the ice breaker activities. As the event concluded, they were surprised to receive prizes for their best work such as best headline, lead, news article, best feature article and best photo.
Though short on time, the participants appreciated what they have learned and aspired for another forum for more valued topics in journalism and photography.
School publications which participated included the Technovator, Iris, The Signal, The Technocrats, Partum, Gazette, The Junior Technovator, and the school publications of the external campuses.
