The Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) received recognition as the lead Implementing Agency of the 2024 Best Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) project in Region VI (Western Visayas).

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) funded project, titled “Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) for Fiber Producing and Weaving Community in Brgy. Baraclayan, Miagao and Passi City Pineapple Leaves Processor,” aimed to enhance local communities’ economic opportunities through technological interventions.

Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut, ISAT U Vice President for Research and Extension and the project leader, personally received the award. He was joined by a delegation of key university officials and project team members, including ISAT U Regent Dr. Lino Baldevarona, Extension Services Director Dr. Adrianne Veloso, Architect Regina Falconite, Dr. Ma. Analie Celda, Jasmine Ibones, Glenda Nakila, and Gloria Fe Golveo.

ISAT U’s project focused on two key areas: supporting the fiber-producing and weaving community in Barangay Baraclayan, Miagao, and assisting pineapple leaf processors in Passi City. The initiative introduced innovative techniques and technologies to improve production efficiency and product quality in these traditional industries.

The CEST program, a flagship project of DOST, seeks to empower economically disadvantaged communities by providing access to scientific and technological innovations. ISAT U’s successful implementation of the program in Western Visayas demonstrates the university’s commitment to bridging academic research with practical community development.

This recognition underscores ISAT U’s role in driving regional development through the application of science and technology in addressing local economic challenges. The presence of a strong delegation from ISAT U at the award ceremony highlights the collaborative nature of the project and the university’s dedication to community engagement.

The award was presented during a ceremony held at the University of Antique, Sibalom Campus on August 24, 2024.

In a heartening display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, a diverse group of individuals and organizations came together to support the “Save Pan de Azucar Island Movement.” The tree growing activity, held under the theme “Forest Restoration for Recovery and Sustainable Life Support,” took place on August 17-18, 2024, at Barangay Tambaliza, Pan de Azucar Island, Concepcion, Iloilo City.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from various groups, including Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel, Concepcion Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), Philippine National Police (PNP), and faculty and students from Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISATU). Also in attendance were the Philippine Coast Guard personnel based in Concepcion and Ajuy, the Barangay LGU of Tambaliza, Tambaliza Girl and Boy Scouts, local residents, and numerous volunteers. Notably, the 4H Club of Sang Tubungan contributed significantly by providing a substantial number of plants for the reforestation effort.

Collective Efforts for Environmental Restoration

The primary goal of the tree growing activity was to contribute to the restoration of forests on Pan de Azucar Island, which is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and supporting local biodiversity. This initiative, driven by the Save Pan de Azucar Island Movement, emphasized the importance of forest restoration as a means to combat environmental degradation and support sustainable living.

Participants engaged in various activities, including planting native tree species, cleaning up the designated planting areas, and educating local residents about the significance of forest conservation. The involvement of ISATU’s Native Tree Advocates and Environmental Stewards was instrumental in promoting the selection and planting of indigenous species, ensuring the ecological integrity of the reforestation efforts.

Community and Institutional Collaboration

The involvement of BFP personnel, Concepcion MENRO, PNP, and ISATU faculty and students exemplified the collaborative spirit essential for successful environmental initiatives. The Philippine Coast Guard personnel provided logistical support, ensuring the smooth execution of the event. The Barangay LGU of Tambaliza played a key role in organizing and facilitating the activity, while the Tambaliza Girl and Boy Scouts, local residents, and volunteers contributed their time and energy to the cause.

The 4H Club of Tubungan and Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para sa Pag-unlad ng Agricultura (MASIPAG) Visayas contribution of plants was a critical component of the event, providing the necessary resources for the reforestation efforts. Additionally, the active participation of ISATU’s Native Tree Advocates and Environmental Stewards highlighted the importance of integrating scientific and local knowledge in environmental conservation.

Looking Ahead

The “Save Pan de Azucar Island Movement” and its tree growing activity represent a significant step towards the recovery and preservation of the island’s natural resources. The initiative aligns with broader environmental goals and serves as a model for future conservation efforts.

The Casa Real Room A was the venue for a momentous occasion that set the stage for transformative development in Iloilo Province. On August 15, 2024, the Iloilo Provincial Government, in partnership with key State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), formally signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Research, Development, and Innovations Initiatives of the Province and the Research, Development, and Innovations Committee (PRDIC).

The signing ceremony marks a significant advancement in the province’s strategic plan to leverage research and technology to achieve its six Development Goals. This initiative, sanctioned under Executive Order No. 22 Series of 2024 on January 15, 2024, is set to drive sustainable economic growth and address critical socio-economic challenges.

A Collaborative Vision

The PRDIC, as established by the Executive Order, will coordinate efforts between the Provincial Government and its academic and research partners. The initiative aims to drive science-based, innovative research that aligns with the province’s development objectives. This partnership will utilize research findings to mitigate poverty and enhance the quality of life for the province’s residents.

The academic institutions involved in this collaboration include the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), University of San Agustin (USA), West Visayas State University (WVSU), Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), Central Philippine University (CPU), Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U), University of Iloilo PHINMA, and Iloilo Doctor’s College. These institutions will contribute their expertise and resources to the research and development efforts.

Opening Doors to Innovation

One of the key components of this initiative is the technology transfer program, which will apply “low-lying fruits” — practical technologies and solutions developed by SUCs, HEIs, and research institutions — to support marginalized sectors. This technology transfer will benefit fishermen, farmers, and other underserved communities by introducing advanced, research-driven solutions.

The collaboration is expected to bring innovative technologies and methodologies to critical areas such as agriculture, fisheries, natural resources, social services, and health. By integrating these advancements, the province aims to improve productivity, resource management, and overall living conditions for its residents.

Looking Forward

The signing of the MOU and MOA is a pivotal step towards realizing the province’s vision of a prosperous and innovative future. The commitment demonstrated by all parties involved provides a solid foundation for the PRDIC’s initiatives and sets the stage for meaningful progress.

The Provincial Planning and Development Office extends its appreciation to the participating institutions and stakeholders for their support. As Iloilo Province embarks on this transformative journey, there is a shared optimism about the potential to achieve significant, positive change through research and collaboration.

Four ISAT U students attended the Undiksha Summer School Camp, an international summer program organized by the Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha in Bali, Indonesia from August 5 to August 11, 2024.

Rhonali Clarisse Amador (BS Biology 3A) , John Heiko Serra (BS Tourism Management 3B), James Arthur Tayongtong (BS Civil Engineering 3A) , and Milagros Therese Tutanes (BS Architecture 3B) took part in the program with the theme “Sustainable Tourism: Empowering Communities and Preserving Local Culture”.

The program gave the students the opportunity to immerse themselves in Indonesian culture through a series of activities including Balinese Traditional Dance and Music lessons, and Indonesian Language and Cooking classes. They also experienced the Kite Festival, an annual event showcasing traditional Indonesian kites. The participants also attended lectures on sustainability, best practices in rural tourism, and marine forest preservation.

John Heiko Serra, one of the participants shared that through the program, he was able to learn the importance of cultural sensitivity and the role of tourism in the implementation of sustainable practices and preservation of local traditions. “This opportunity is not only broadened my understanding of global travel dynamics but also deepened my appreciation for the rich cultural heritage that destinations like Bali offer,” he said.

For James Arthur Tayongyong, it was the warmth and hospitality extended to him by the people of Bali that made the experience memorable. “They embraced our differences with genuine openness and kindness. The rich cultural heritage they shared with us with profound reverence left me utterly mesmerized” he added.

The participants hope that sharing their enriching experiences with their fellow students as well as the faculty, and staff at Undiksha Summer School will bring a positive impact in the whole school community.

A significant step towards enhancing collaboration was achieved today as Iloilo Science and Technology University, Brgy. Lanit Jaro, Iloilo City and Global Shapers Iloilo, Inc. signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at a formal ceremony held at the ISAT University Board Room. The agreement is set to pave the way for various joint initiatives, extension projects, and knowledge-sharing activities between the three esteemed agencies.

The signing of this MOA underscores the commitment of the three agencies to fostering a collaborative environment that drives innovation, enhances learning, and contributes to societal progress. ISAT U alongside Brgy. Lanit Jaro, Iloilo City amd Global Shapers Iloilo, Inc. look forward to a productive partnership that will bring about lasting benefits for all stakeholders.

The Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) marked the beginning of ASEAN Month with a flag ceremony today. The event, held on campus, featured a series of activities highlighting the university’s commitment to ASEAN awareness and regional cooperation.

The ceremony commenced with the raising of ASEAN flags, led by ISAT U President Dr. Gabriel M. Salistre Jr., accompanied by members of the Administrative Council Officials. This symbolic act underscored the university’s recognition of its role within the broader ASEAN community.

Dr. Juniffer Badoles, Director of National and International Affairs (NIA), delivered the opening remarks, setting the tone for the celebration. The event then featured a concise ASEAN presentation, followed by an engaging question-and-answer session led by Hannah Grace Ortequia, ISAT U’s student ambassador.

A highlight of the celebration was the ASEAN costume presentation. Administrative Council Officials and representatives from various colleges of the Iloilo City Campus showcased traditional attire from ASEAN member countries, offering a visual representation of the region’s rich cultural diversity.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the ISAT U Performing Arts group presented a cultural number, demonstrating the university’s commitment to preserving and promoting regional artistic traditions.

The event culminated with a message from President Dr. Gabriel M. Salistre Jr., who reiterated ISAT U’s dedication to fostering ASEAN integration and understanding. “As we celebrate ASEAN Month, let us take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to these values of connectivity and resilience. Let us embrace the diversity that makes ASEAN so unique and learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives.”

This flag ceremony marks the beginning of a month-long celebration of ASEAN at ISAT U, aimed at enhancing students’ knowledge of regional affairs and promoting a sense of ASEAN identity within the academic community.

The event shows ISAT U’s proactive approach in aligning its educational mission with broader regional goals, preparing students for active participation in an increasingly interconnected ASEAN community.
