One hundred and two (102) local and international researchers attended the first Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) and the International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNEVOC) International Research Conference on Science and Technology  (IRCST) on November 30-December 2, 2016 in Iloilo City.

With the theme, “Fostering Innovative Approaches in Science and Technology Research and Development,” the conference aimed to initiate higher learning through intellectual discourse. It also aimed to provide opportunities to share improved research outputs for professional growth and gain insights through the sharing of industrial wisdom and sectoral technologies aimed at curriculum development. The conference was also a venue for designing specific strategic logic in achieving an improved society through science and technology.

The three-day activity was opened by a keynote address of Dr. Fiorillo B. Abenes, Faculty and Institutional Development Manager, United States Agency for International Development – Science and Technology Research and Innovation and Development (USAID-STRIDE). He discussed the “Innovative Approaches in the Conduct of Science and Technology Research and Development, Intellectual Property Protection USAID and Technology Transfer.”

Two Filipino and two foreign scientists talked in the plenary lectures. Dr. Alumanda M. De La Rosa of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute lectured on “Nuclear Technology as an Enabling Technology and Innovation.”  Psychometrics and Test Security Consultant Dr. Leonardo S. Sotaridona focused on “Innovations on Psychometrics and Test Security.”

Dr. Hwang Gyu-Hee of the Korean Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KTIVET) Center for Global Cooperation, UNEVOC CENTER-Republic of Korea, talked on the “Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Entrepreneurship and Best Practices of the Republic of Korea.“  Anita Widiawati, MPD of the UNEVOC Center of Indonesia, on the other hand, discussed on “Research and Development Work for Curriculum Enhancement in Indonesia.”

The researchers, 22 of whom from ISAT U main campus, shared their researches on the parallel sessions on the second day of the activity. Capping the three-day conference was the tour in the different cultural, science, technology and industrial areas of Iloilo and Guimaras provinces.

“Caffeination” an idea conceptualized by the Research and Extension Services Office was showcased in the conference. It was a ten-minute presentation of ISAT U researches to business group who would benefit from the study. The concept of “caffeination” is an informal presentation of researches or research proposals to potential beneficiaries, fund agencies and stakeholders over a cup of coffee for a short period of time.
