ROTCU holds graduation

Seven hundred forty-three basic cadets and five first class advance cadets took oath as reservists of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on April 1, 2015.

The Reserve Officer's Training Corps Unit (ROTCU) batch 2014-2015 graduation was held on the college's gymnasium with Maj. Rudante Dollar (RES) PA as the commencement speaker.

The certificates of the graduates were given to the batch corps commander, Cadet Col Jason Puasan. The activity also marked the first day of Cadet Col. Edwardo Peñaranda as the batch 2015-2016 corps commander.

Meanwhile, in his speech, Maj. Dollar encouraged the students to join the Iloilo battalion. He also mentioned the benefits and trainings when joining.

"The nation needs reservists," said Maj. Dollar.

Meanwhile, the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) ROTCU garnered a score of 87.96% in the recent tactical inspection held on March 9, 2015.Activities during the tactical inspection were the squad drill, platoon drill, company drill, and map reading.

This year's batch is the second to the last batch of the WVCST ROTCU because of the implementation of the K-12 education.

 

 

 

EVC studes receive diplomas

A total of 317 Evening Vocational Course (EVC) students  graduated on March 30, 2015.

The graduates came from the Apparel, Drafting and Architecture, Automotive Mechanics, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Heating Ventilating Airconditioning- Refrigeration Technology (HVAC-RT), Industrial Electricity, PC Hardware Servicing, Machine Shop, Welding and Fabrication Departments.

This year's commencement speaker was Dr. Elena Gonzaga, an alumna of the college and is presently an Education Program Supervisor II of the Department of Education (DepEd). She stressed out that the event was just a begining of more challenging situations.

According to Dr. Gonzaga, tasks will be more complicated but students should appreciate unpleasant experiences.

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams," said Dr. Gonzaga.

She also emphasized the importance of education and how it breaks the cycle of poverty.

Forty-nine shop awaredees were honored during the commencement rites.

The EVC classes of the college started in 2013 under the Department of Industrial Technology.

Toshiba Phils officials visit WVCST

Officials of the Toshiba Information Equipment Philippines Inc. visited the college last March 12, 2015. 

Mr. Toshichika Takahashi, Executive Vice President of Toshiba Information Equipment Philippines Inc., together with other company representatives came to recruit qualified students for its scholarship grant and for the company's employment needs.

The Toshiba scholarship offers 100 percent off on tuition fees and a monthly allowance. A two-year employment contract with the company will also be automatically offered to the Electrical, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering scholars and students after graduation.

"They do not only offer good opportunities and employment to students but they also invited teachers to visit their plant in Laguna," said by Dr. Susan de la Cruz, Director of the Office of Student Affairs, in an interview.

The company is also planning to donate microscopes to the school aside from the scholarship grant and employment contract.

As part of its recruitment, Toshiba scholars and WVCST 2015 graduates Maricris Reyes, Jess Rey Umadhay, Rygilen Hismana, Marvin Paborito and Rhavie Joy Cunada are now absorbed by the company as its new employees.

Other Toshiba representatives were Ms. Ma. Corazon Bunah, VP for Human Resource Department; Mr. Jose Uy, Senior Manager; Vanessa  Uy, Associate Manager; and Joana Manuel, Associate Manager.

 

 

S&T research exhibits and symposium held

 

In order to choose the best researches possible for entry to the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) research contest, 105 select students of the college presented their theses during the students’ science and technology research exhibits and symposium.

The presentations of the theses ,which was held on March 11, 2015 was held at the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) EdTech Center, was participated in by the Bachelor of Industrial Technology, Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Technology, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Information System, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science students.

Nine entries came from the industrial product category; eight from the food product Category; and 12 from the information communications Technology (ICT) category.

The ICT category, which has the most numbers of participants, was divided into two subcategories: algorithm and system.

The participants from the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology presented their studies with their invented gadgets while the Hotel and Restaurant Technology (HRT) students showed their food for sampling. The ICT students, on the other hand, presented their systems and applications.
