To prepare the future teachers of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) College of Education (COE) on K-12 curriculum, 50 student-teachers attended a seminar-workshop on Inquiry-based Science Teaching.
The two series seminar-workshop was held on January 16, 2015 and February 13, 2015, at the EdTech center.
During the February 13 workshop, eight selected participants presented their papers on inquiry-based science teaching. The Diploma in Teaching (DIT) students from West Visayas State University (WVSU) and a student from WVCST also presented their reflections from the eight-hour seminar-workshop.
The seminar workshop involved critical thinking and it was very challenging, said by Jeline Arellano, a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science student.
Inquiry based learning is a process where students learn the foundation of scientific thinking such as formulating questions, investigating to find answers, building new understandings, meanings and knowledge, and communicating their learnings to others. It is also an important element in the science curriculum.
In his speech, Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut, VP for Research and Extension, emphasized the process of an inquiry and how it plays a big role in real life situations.
Miss Ayaka Mizuki and Ms. Yasue Mizuki, the resource speakers are volunteers from Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA), a Japanese organization that offers to teach inquiry-based teaching to schools adopting the K-12 Education.
This seminar-workshop was sponsored by the JICA, WVCST-COE, and the WVSU Science Enhancement Program.
