The College of Engineering and Architecture held yesterday, April 10, 2014 the launching of BS Marine Engineering CAR (Completed the Academic Requirements).

The launching was spearheaded by the OIC-President, Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut, WVCST Key Officials and the faculty and staff of the College of Engineering and Architecture, Marine Engineering Department.

This year’s guest speaker was 2/M Venerando V. Lamasan who is an alumnus of the Laboratory School of WVCST then ISAT. Lamasan shared his success story by emphasizing that it is not on someone’s built or height that one can become a successful seafarer rather it is on one’s ability, determination and discipline.

According to statistics, Lamasan reports that there is a great need for maritime officers now and Filipino seafarers are the most sought to fill in those positions. However, he said, “we cannot fill this up because most Filipinos seafarers finished only short courses instead of Marine Engineering or if not, most of them does not pursue an ambition to become officers.”

In the ceremony, it was also stressed by Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut, that these candidates should finish their marine internship for at least a year and must come back to WVCST to be confirmed as graduates of BS Marine Engineering. After that, according to him, they have to strive to become officers on board because he believes that Filipino seafarers have the abilities and skills to man the ships and not just ordinary workers under the leadership of foreigners. The more they equip themselves with knowledge, the more they can uplift the image of Filipinos and most especially the lives of their families.

The candidates for having Completed the Academic Requirements leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering were led by Christian Jay Amolar, Axel Michael John Rey Calceña, Nickho Dapulano, Danrey Pagaypay, Gerald Prudente and Jerome Angelo Sorenio who were given the Academic Merit Awards.

Also present in the ceremony were the Industry partners who are working hand in hand with the College in facilitating the technical needs of the students.
