WVCST Collaborates with NGO’s in Relief Operations

               Western Visayas College of Science and Technology in collaboration with the HECKS Act Alliance, a Switzerland based Non- Government Organization and Task Force Mapalad, an organization of farmers in Negros Occidental heed the utmost needs of the victims of typhoon Yolanda in Capiz and other neighboring towns in a relief operation.

                The NGO’s chose WVCST as their partner to do the repacking and at the same time the covered gym is used as the depot of the goods that are repacked and distributed to areas affected by typhoon Yolanda especially in Capiz and the 5th district of Iloilo Province . The group is helping out residents from the different towns and municipalities in Capiz by giving them packs of goods that include 25 kilos of rice, 2 kilos of monggo, 1 kilo of dried fish, 1 kilo of salt, and 5 cans of sardines. One Thousand families who were already identified will receive the goods. Some volunteer students from the NSTP, ROTC, CWTS, MTS and BSEd students do the repacking facilitated by the faculty like Prof. Andres Ortega, Jr., Prof. George Lopez and Prof. Cherry Pink Barredo. Some of them also join in the delivery of the goods. According to Prof. Ortega, he and his students already went to the 5th District recently to do the assessment of the damage in terms of livelihood and housing as part of their responsibility in the collaboration wherein WVCST will also provide research or knowledge transfer regarding the relief operation.

                Aside from Task Force Mapalad, another NGO – Task Force Masipag also collaborated with the College with the same purpose in their relief operation. They will also be giving out food like rice, sardines, monggo, dried fish and mineral water to name some. The group also targets 1,000 families as their recipients for the next batch of goods that will be delivered this week. Task Force Masipag is a local non-government organization composed of farmers in the Province of Iloilo.

WVCST Submits Four Programs for AACUP Accreditation

            In line with its vision, mission and core values, Western Visayas College of Science and Technology submits 4 programs for accreditation, 1 of which is Doctor of Education – Educational Management for its second survey and another program for the College of Industrial Technology – Bachelor of Fashion and Apparel for its 1st survey. The two other programs are under the Barotac Nuevo Campus which will have the first survey on Bachelor of Secondary Education and BS Information Technology.

                In his speech during the opening program, Dr. Luis M. Sorolla, Jr. emphasized that the task of the Accreditors is to help us comply with the quality and excellent standard in higher education. He encouraged everyone to always do what is best. Dr. Sorolla also expressed his thanks to the AACUP Accreditors for their presence especially in their responsibility which at the end of the survey, will lead to a productive and improved institution. According to the President, this activity also helps in the goal of the country to become more competitive by providing our students quality and excellent education.

 

                The Accreditation Survey Visit started on December 10, 2013 and will end on Friday, December 13 in which the general assessment and comments will be presented. The team of accreditors is headed by Dr. Hedeliza A. Pineda, CTU – Over-all Coordinator, Dr. Francisco G. Corpin, LNU, Coordinator for the Main Campus and Team Leader for BFAT, Dr. Candido Kinkito, (NOrSU, Team Leader Ed. D.), Dr. Hubert Quiniones- CTU, Dr. Marilou C. Gravador – NOrSU- Dr. Edgar A. Solana – CTU and Prof. Elenita B. Academia (Library)- NOrSU.

                For the survey in Barotac Nuevo Campus, the Coordinator is Dr. Jean F. Puerto and joined by Dr. Rey C. Roxas – CTU (Team Leader- BS InfoTech), Dr. Marilyn P. Macapagal – NorSU, Prof. Monico G. Acas – Siq SC, Prof. Sotera C. Cagang- NOrSU and Prof. Elenita B. Academia (Library) – NorSU.

IPOPHL Awards WVCST Research Div and VP for Research and Extension

                The Western Visayas College of Science and Technology Research Division wasrecently  given the award “Bibo sa Ulat” by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines for having religiously submitted their monthly and annual reports and providing inputs  to IPOPHL’s studies, surveys and plans. Likewise, WVCST, being identified as an ITSO institution, received the “Bukas Palad” award for its generosity in hosting seminars, trainings and other events of the ITSO (Innovation and Technology Support Office).

                Aside from the awards that the College and the Research Division received, Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut, Vice President for Research and Extension was also awarded as the “Ulirang Guro ng ITSO”. Dr. Ambut, who has been trained on Intellectual Property, was commended for sharing his knowledge on the different aspects on Intellectual Property and by that it helps in increasing the multiplier effect of the ITSO training program and supporting the vision of IPOPHL of demystifying and democratizing Intellectual property.
