Pahampang 2013 Opens

Excited faces representing different Colleges in the Main Campus and Satellite Campuses assembled early for the parade on the Opening Ceremony for the Pahampang 2013. Despite the heat, students showed their full support for this year’s activity in sports headed by their Deans, coaches and sports managers which was very much appreciated especially by Dr. Allen Russ Napud, this year’s over all chairman of the Foundation Anniversary.

According to Dr. Napud, being a part of this event shows each one’s commitment and love for sports. He was positive that the two-day event will showcase athletic performances of the highest quality. Therefore, he suggested that everyone should do their best and compete in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play. “Sometimes, it’s just a simple game, but often, sports is much more than that. It is full of life’s lessons that can teach you about failure, joy, disappointment, excitement, winning and losing. It’s also about journey, teamwork, utility and selflessness.”

On the other hand, Mr. Robert Uy, the Pahampang 2013 guest of honor, and at the same time the Vice-Chairman of the Iloilo Sports Council and the Regional Director of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas as well as the President /General Manager of Toyota Iloilo Inc., expressed that sports activity is necessary for a healthy body and an active mind. “It teaches us the values of teamwork, patience, consideration, humility and discipline – characters that I would consider more important than knowledge.” He further said that the things we learn from sports cannot be learned from a book nor acquired from the classrooms. He believes that sports is a powerful tool of training and when integrated in academic and practical skills, WVCST students will be at par with those of other colleges and universities all over the country. Lastly, he reminded the students that being in the Pahampang 2013 is not only about winning the game but also gaining friends.

After his very inspiring speech, a plaque of appreciation was handed to him by Dr. Nehema K. Misola, VP for Admin and Finance and Dr. Manuel A. Sanchez, Jr.,OIC-VPAA and Main Campus Administrator.

The hoisting of the Athletic Banners followed as well as the lighting of the urn by the National Gold Medalists in Combative Sports namely Ritchel Jane Silladora, Jovic Digdigan, Ronald Margoma and Edwin Baldevarona. Jesus Valenzuela, a Gold Medalist in Arnis led the Oath of Amateurism while Prof. Esmael P.Tayona, the Tournament Manager of Badminton, led the Oath of Games Officials. Dr. Manuel A. Sanchez,Jr., officially declared the Pahampang 2013 open which was then followed by the Ceremonial Toss headed by Mr. Robert Uy, together with Dr. Nehema K. Misola and Dr. Manuel Sanchez, Jr.

The Pahampang 2013 kicked off with the Cheer Dance Competition.

Day 2 Shows Brighter Future

“The generation of today is our future. The talents that they will show us are the proofs that they have the potentials of becoming efficient citizens of the future.” Words of encouragement from Dr. Nehema K. Misola, College VP for Admin and Finance. This was her conclusion as she tried to analyze what lies ahead as she looked at the contestants for the Literary Musical Contest on the 2nd day of the celebration of the Foundation Anniversary.

Dr. Misola expressed her appreciation to the faculty as they continue to do their responsibility in helping WVCST mold the students to become the hope and the future of the nation. She is optimistic that the administration together with the faculty and personnel can make a difference in touching the lives of the students entrusted to this institution. For, she said, “these students may either become great personalities of our society or may become another Janet Lim-Napoles who turned out to be a burden of the Philippine society.” She believes that whatever the future of the students be is what this institution made them.

The Literary Musical Contest was the afternoon activity on the 2nd day of the Foundation Anniversary celebration which included Extemporaneous Speaking, Character Interpretation and Pagkukuwento for the Literary Contest and Vocal Solo and Duet, both in OPM, and Guitar Playing for the Musical Contest. It was then followed by the Hip-Hop Dance Contest and the Dance Sports.

Earlier that day was the Skills Olympics in different categories like Architectural Drafting, Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Electrical Technology, Electronics, Fashion and Apparel Technology, FCM Technology, HVACR Technology, Computer Technology and Mechanical Technology.

“Soar high…” says College Prexy

If there is someone who is most excited, happiest and very supportive of the celebration on the 108th Foundation Anniversary of WVCST, that person is no other than the College President, Dr. Luis M. Sorolla, Jr. In his speech in the opening ceremony, the President expressed how happy he is that WVCST has reached 108 years and is still soaring high. He said that it simply means that the College has been performing well because if not it wouldn’t have gone this far.

In addition, Dr. Sorolla encouraged everyone to continue giving their best because the College is starting to reap what they have been working for. “Continue to work hard, enjoy what you are doing especially in this celebration for this might be the last of our Foundation Anniversary as a College because sooner we will already become what we have been dreaming of… to become Iloilo Science and Technology University.” However, before achieving this, according to him, we shouldn’t stop dreaming and achieving goals. “Soar high and do what is best. Just be patient and pray that they will now give time to our documents. I know the time is coming nearer.”

The President also took the opportunity to thank everybody who has done their part for the success of this celebration but left high expectations for next year’s celebration because for him the school will be celebrating our next foundation anniversary not as a College but as a University.
